President Buhari Canvasses Efforts for Polio-free Status

The President has revealed his desire for Nigerians to continue putting in all the effort needed to be able to fight and be certified by 2017 as a polio-free nation, in which the last case recorded was in July last year.

His office on Tuesday said;
"I want to reaffirm the commitment of the federal government to sustain the gains and momentum to enable Nigeria to achieve certification by 2017," Buhari told a meeting of state governors in Abuja late Monday.

"I am, therefore, inviting you to join me in actualizing this pledge, as experts have cautioned that the progress we have made in polio eradication efforts is still very fragile and that there is the risk of gains reversal if we don’t sustain this great effort," he said.

Nigeria in July marked one year since its last case of polio, raising hopes it would soon be taken off the list of endemic countries as the first step to being declared free of the disease. The last case was in the Sumaila district of Kano state, in the country’s north — one of only six in 2014 and well down on the 338 recorded in 2009, according to World Health Organization data.

However, President Buhari is calling on all not to relent effort in completely eradicating the epidemic. He said;

"As you are aware, the fact that we have not had any case of polio for over a year now does not mean that we are polio free. It is just one of the milestones on the path to being polio-free,"

He urged the governors to diligently supervise the polio eradication programme in their states and join the Abuja government in ensuring resources were provided and efficiently utilised.

After, 8 am the governor stopped workers that came late to work from entering the complex. In his usual exuberance and dictatorial style, the governor threatened the workers after tongue lashing them, several of the workers took the unusual step of prostrating to beg the governor so as to save their job.  It is the most inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to Nigerian workers since the advent of democracy in 1999.

Ben Carson Catches up with Donald Trump in Poll Upset

Ben Carson is tied with Donald Trump in Iowa in the latest Monmouth University Poll released Monday, marking the first time that a GOP contender has closed the gap in Trump's lead in the primary. Both Carson and Trump got 23 percent support from Iowa's Republican voters, while former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina came in third with 10 percent of the vote. None of the other candidates in the Republican field eked out double-digit support.

Aside from marking the big moment in which Trump no longer leads the rest of the GOP field by a wide margin, the poll also provides an illuminating look at what Iowa voters value in a Republican presidential candidate. None of the poll's top three contenders (Trump, Carson, and Fiorina) comes from a political background; all are considered outsider candidates.

The poll, which was conducted between August 27-30, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
