"Do you think this is a good idea?" Kate Ayomi asked with a strained smile, worried lines creasing her forehead. She shook her head, still overwhelm with the whole story. She's practically still in shock. And dealing with work and caring for her friend had taken a toll on her these past days.
"What isn't?" He asked in that typical Nigerian way of replying questions with question. He heaved himself from the doorway to make room for the nurse to leave the room. He expelled a loud sigh as he walked towards her bed side. For long moments, he stared at her slim form on the bed. She looked so helpless but still beautiful. The exuberance young lady he first met is now a shadow of herself. He tried not to imagine the pain she must be going through because it'd take away the courage he needs to fight for both of them.
Another loud sigh, he turned to face Kate fighting hard to hide the pain choking him. "I don't know if this is right but I do know I want to watch over her now that I'm awake. I want to be here when next she wakes up."
Kate felt her eyes welled with tears at the anguish they've had to endure. The cut on his forehead has been re-dressed and the bruises turning purplish but healing. He was sedated too for two days more to restrain him from killing himself with guilt. Atleast, it was a consolation when he heard the other passengers have been unscathed by the incident. She rocked herself gently back and forth like a little child, too confused over what to say. Slowly, she looked from her unconscious friend to him, what a shame! This is how her friend came meet such a good man. She shook her head. Well, she seems to be doing that for the past three days. "Please, you need to look after yourself too." She whispered and left them alone.
Dennis couldn't take his eyes away from her. He fears for her sanity because of how frantic he has been told she had been since the horrifying incident. Who wouldn't? Three days and still counting but she still can't get pass the scenes of the incident. Even in sub-consciousness, she's reliving each moment again. He knows because of the riot of emotion on her face. She looked so scared.
At the sound of moaning, Dennis crouched down and took her hand. It lay limb and cold in his, as if life had drained out of it. He held it and rubbed it gently, kissing each finger, giving her the warmth she needs and murmuring "I'm here with you, we are in this together and we will be fine."
"Yes, she...no they will be fine." Efe could hear the soothing voice again, the same one that whispered those apologetic words. But terrifying images, swept through her dream and pulled her towards an unknown void. She needs to listen to him but the images clung on like crawls...... To be continued. Cheers!
