He died shortly after complaining of stomach ache on Saturday, after voting and returning to his country home in Ogbonicha, Ofu Local government, and was advised to take a rest. However, he started vomiting blood and died a while later.
There are also reports that he died as early as 5:00am before the collation and announcement of electoral results. Other reports says it was after the election was declared inconclusive.
One of the aide of the APC candidate, Tenimu Nasidi said being a Muslim they have taken his death in good faith as they strongly believed that God gives and God takes, "To me I believed that his time was up; nothing any man can do to stop it."
To mourn his death; Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada has declared 3 days to honour the former governor of the state and candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the Saturday Governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu.
In a statement, on Monday, by the Secretary to the State
Government, Prof. Adegbemiro Jegede, Wada described Prince Audu as a
great Kogite and a great Nigerian who has contributed immensely to the
socio-economic and political development of Kogi State.
He commiserated with the family of Prince Audu and the
entire people of Kogi State, describing Audu as a leader who always
strive to give his pursuit the best.
Audu was on his way to a historic third electoral
victory, with 240,867 votes as his closest challenger, Governor Idris
Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 199,514 votes.
However, instead of being declared as the winner of the
election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced
yesterday afternoon that the election was inconclusive, saying that
there would be re-run polls in 59 polling units which have about 49,000
registered voters.
