Delta State House of Assembly Warns DESOPADEC Against Irrelevant Projects.

Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) has warned the new governing board of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, against embarking on programmes that have no positive effect on oil bearing communities in the state.

Handing down the warning during the committee’s maiden meeting with the management of the commission, Chairman, House Committee on DESOPADEC, Dennis Omovie charged the board not to lose focus on the intent and objectives of the commission.

Omovie said: "At a point, the House was apprehensive that the intent of establishing DESOPADEC was not being met, but thank God for the intervention of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who brought an amendment bill to restructure the commission."

The lawmaker said that with the present structure of DESOPADEC, the commission had been repositioned for better service delivery and as a key parastatal to the state government and stressed the need for it to partner other arms of government, including the state legislature to move the state forward.

Omovie urged the new management of DESOPADEC to be "Proactive on issues of development in oil bearing communities in the state. The yearnings and aspirations of the people must be met at all times and dividends of democracy attracted them."

He drew the attention of the commission on challenges of development in riverine communities of the state, assuring that the committee and indeed the state House of Assembly would help "promote the zeal by the new board of DESOPADEC to make a difference in the lives of the people."

Omovie appealed to the chairman and members of the DESOPADEC board to help drive the prosperity for all Deltans agenda of Governor Okowa, saying that physical positive changes must be made visible in the mandate areas of the commission.
