New EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu, Arrest Errant Staff over Giving False Information to the Media.

Economic and Financial Crime Commission acting chairman Ibrahim Magu, has made arrest of some of the staff who are involved in supplying the media with false and unauthourised information to dict the image of the commission.

The action was described by an insider as a 'massive clean-up of the agency.' The action of the officers is prejudicial to discipline and violates their oath of allegiance to the Commission, an official of the EFCC said.


Those already in custody include a management staff of the rank of director, some senior and lower cadre officers, including a former senior operative who was allegedly dismissed for corruption and involvement in cult activities.

An official of the commission said, “In recent times, the EFCC has been at the receiving end of negative reports by bloggers and mainstream media, targeting its leadership. The malicious reports have done untold damage to the reputation of the Commission.

"Available facts indicate that the staffers, who operated as a syndicate, were desperately projecting the management staff to take over the leadership of the Commission while attacking the integrity, professionalism and reputation of the EFCC.

"The management staff is believed to have rallied the others into the plot with the promise that he would see to the exit of all police officers (including those who recruited him) from the Commission, once he ascended "the throne," as Executive Chairman."

However, investigation is still ongoing which may lead to more arrest and also the Commission is still looking into the cases of those accused of corruption by members of the public.
 
The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached to comment for this story. He did not answer or return calls Thursday night.
